DYNAMIC ASSESSMENT AND MEDIATED LEARNING: COURSES AVAILABLE

We offer a number of 2-hour modules that cover various aspects of Dynamic Assessment work, which are detailed below. Our most popular full-day course ‘Rethink Learning using Dynamic Assessment’ is a combination of some of the content covered in modules 1, 2, 3 and 4 and is delivered at various intervals throughout the year, both face-to-face and online. The specific dates are always advertised on our website.

Rethink Learning using Dynamic Assessment (Please note that this course is a full day (6 hours))

In this all day workshop, we cover the fundamentals of dynamic assessment (DA), delve into the practical applications of mediated learning, and consider the Cognitive and Affective Learning Principles that are evident in children’s learning. We also look at some materials used in DA, and consider issues relating to putting DA into practice, including feedback and report writing. Includes looking at video footage and real-life cases.

Dates currently available for bookings:  Tuesday 12 May 2026 or Friday 17 July 2026 (online). Click on date to take you directly to booking page.

We are currently offering a discounted fee of only £45 on the modules: 1) Fundamentals of DA; 2) Mediated Learning; 3) Cognitive and Affective Learning Principles. Also 20% EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT on all other courses. Just enter coupon code EARLYBIRD20 before 30/04/2026

We also offer the following 2-hour modules:

Module 1) Fundamentals of Dynamic Assessment (2 hours)
This module covers the fundamentals of DA using animations, film clips, and group activities. We explore the rationale behind DA, drawing on the work of developmental psychologists such as Lev Vygotsky, Reuven Feuerstein, and Carol Dweck.

Available Dates: Friday 16th October 2026 (9.00-11.00am) (online).

Module 2) Mediated Learning (2 hours)
We explore the concept of mediated learning, breaking it down into 17 components or ‘principles’, analysing video clips, and providing practical guidance on how to apply this powerful approach.

Available Dates: Friday 16th October 2026 (11.30am-1.30pm) (online).

Module 3) Cognitive and Affective Principles (2 hours)
This module examines how children learn and identifies key behaviours to observe, nurture, and develop. We analyse video clips to understand how best to intervene with these cognitive and emotional aspects of learning.

Available Dates: Friday 16th October 2026 (2.30-4.30pm) (online).

Module 4) Dynamic Assessment and Feedforward (2 hours)
This session explores how to move forward after conducting a dynamic assessment, offering techniques to set individual learning plans and goals. Video clips from real cases are used to illustrate these concepts.

Available Dates: Friday 12th June 2026 (1.30-3.30pm) (online).

Module 5) How to Use Dynamic Assessment with ‘Off-the-Shelf’ Materials (2 hours)
We demonstrate how everyday games, puzzles, and problem-solving activities can be used in DA. While specific materials are available for DA, this module shows how a variety of games can be used to explore a child’s learning. Video clips illustrate how this can be done.

Available Dates: Friday 12th June 2026 (9.30-11.30am) (online).

Module 6) How to Use Dynamic Assessment Remotely (2 hours)
We demonstrate how DA can be implemented online using platforms like Teams and Zoom. The session provides tips and strategies for using DA in remote settings.

Available Dates: Thursday 11th June 2026 (2.30-4.30pm) (online).

Module 7) Using Dynamic Assessment when writing Education, Health and Care Needs Assessments (EHCNAs) (2 hours)
This module explains how to use DA when contributing to an EHC Needs Assessment, highlighting options beyond standardised assessments.

Available Dates: Thursday 4th June 2026 (2.30-4.30pm) and Friday 10th July 2026 (10.30am-12.30pm) (both online).

Module 8) Exploring the Diverse Applications of Dynamic Assessment: Insights from a Local Authority Educational Psychologist (3 hours)
In this module, led by Dr. Suzy Shaw, we explore the diverse applications of dynamic assessment within the fast-paced environment of a local authority educational psychology service. Through real-world examples, we consider how dynamic assessment can be effectively integrated into observations, consultations, and assessments to explore children and young people’s learning potential.

Available Dates: Friday 3rd July 2026 (9.30am-12.30pm) (online).

Specialised Courses (Full-day or Half-day):

Working with Bilingual, Multilingual, and EAL Children: Implications for Practice
(Full day: 9.30am–4.00pm, note this course is not about Dynamic Assessment practice)
This course explores the theory and practice of working with bilingual, multilingual, and EAL children. We discuss the advantages and challenges of bilingualism and explore practical considerations for professionals working with these groups of children and young people. Please note that this course does NOT cover content related to DA but focuses on working with bilingual, multilingual and EAL children more generally.

Available Dates: Friday 6th November 2026 (9.30am-4.00pm) (online).

Using Dynamic Assessment with children who have significant language and communication challenges (SLD/PMLD)
In this full day course (9.30am-4.00pm), delivered jointly by Dr Fraser Lauchlan and Dr Kirstie Rees (author of The Mental Health and Wellbeing of Children and Young People with Learning Difficulties), we consider some of the practical considerations required when working with children who have significant language and communication challenges (SLD/PMLD). The session will balance psychological theory and research with practical, evidence-based strategies and resources which EPs can use in their practice and support educational colleagues to apply in a busy school context.

Available Dates: Wednesday 30th September 2026 (9.30am-4.00pm) (online).

Metacognition and How to Create Autonomous Learners
(9.30am-1.00pm, note this course is not about Dynamic Assessment practice)
In this half-day workshop, delivered by Dr Taryn Moir, author of How to Create Autonomous Learners, we explore evidence-based approaches to developing metacognitive skills and self-study habits. We discuss how to engage students, parents, and partners, and how to implement these strategies across a class, school, or consortium.

Available Dates: Tuesday 24th November 2026 (9.30am-1.00pm) (online).

Rethink Learning using Dynamic Assessment
In this whole-day workshop (9.30am-4.00pm), we cover the fundamentals of DA, delve into the practical applications of mediated learning, and consider the Cognitive and Affective Learning Principles that are evident in children’s learing. We also look at some materials used in DA, and consider issues relating to putting DA into practice, including feedback and report writing. Includes looking at video footage and real-life cases.

Available Dates: Tuesday 12th May 2026 or Friday 17th July 2026 (9.30am-4.00pm) (both online).

Video-enhanced Dynamic Assessment for experienced practitioners

In this whole-day workshop (9.30am-4.00pm), delivered jointly by Dr Fraser Lauchlan and Dr Suzy Shaw, we consider the digital feedback (or ‘feedforward’) approach as an effective means of feeding back the results of dynamic assessment in such a way that will promote the potential success of a subsequent intervention plan. We will consider: what to film and why; how to analyse video through the lens of DA; how to build and incorporate video and DA into your wider practice. The training is suitable for those who have attended previous dynamic assessment training and who wish to develop their existing skills further using video and evidence-based outcomes. Includes looking at video footage and real-life cases.

Available Dates: Friday 18th September 2026 (9.30am-4.00pm) (online).
